The Birmingham Public Library (Jefferson County) contains an excellent department, the
Southern History Library. Complete microfilm of available census records
for most southern states can be found here as well as a very good selection
of material for almost every county in Alabama and every southern state.

The library's Heritage
Room is the nerve center for genealogical
research. It currently houses census records for all southern states,
but also has expanded its collection to cover many other states of the
U.S. Numerous family histories are available along with a
tremendous genealogical magazine collection. Family files are also
maintained as part of the collection.
