Mt Hebron
United Methodist Church

Crews Community

Mt. Hebron began as a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, South in 1879.  The original building was made of logs and was located at the back of the cemetery near Elias S. and Josephine Holmes' graves, down the hill by a large oak tree and spring.  It had a large fireplace at one end.  It doubled as a school house.  The church pews were logs split open, hewn and smoothed with legs on them.  This building burned while school was in session.

The second building was built where the present church building stands.  It also housed a school.  In 1956 the second church building was torn down and the current building was erected.  It was built piecemeal first of concrete blocks, at a cost of $900 to lay the foundation, put in windows, etc.  In 1984-5 it was bricked.  In 1989 Gerald Hughes suggested to his father Earlie that he wanted to make a fellowship hall out of a Sunday School room.  It was built for $14,500.

The first pastor in 1879 was George M.G. Dunkin.
