I need information on the Winston's of Dekalb Co. There were two brothers William O. and John. William built the Winston Place in Valleyhead. I need information on them. I also need to know the name of the slaves they brought with them from Virginia. Also John sold some slaves to build his house at the foot of Sand Mt. Any information on black and white winston's in that area would be greatly appreciated.

Name: Ronald Bruce <Bruce_Clan@yahoo.com> Date: 2005-08-10 What year was your earliest family here? 1845 Comments:
My line comes from the 2nd surviving son of Rev. Bailey Bruce and wife, Martha "Patsy" Gilliam, both of North Carolina. They first moved to Jackson County and then to DeKalb County where Rev. Bruce, a Baptist preacher helped build a Church, worked with the Indian population and served in the Alabama Legistation.
2nd son, Harris Gilliam Bruce, b. 1837 married Sarah Plemons of Gilmer County, GA. He married her while in the Confederate Army on 23 Sep 1863. Rev. Bruce had resided there in 1844 to build a church and already knew the Plemmons family of North Carolina.
After the war, H.G. Bruce, as he prefered to be called, and Sarah returned to Jackson County, where John Bailey Bruce, my Great Grandfather was born in 1867.
By 1880, John Bailey Bruce, at 13 had gone to live with his aged Grandparents. By this time, Harris and Sarah had 2 more children, Thomas D. Bruce, b. 1869 and William F. Bruce, b. 1872.
When Harris Gilliam Bruce died in 1873, Sarah returned to Gilmer County, GA with her 2 young sons. She married Creed Hipp in 1874 and later relocated to Whitfield County, GA. This seperation lead to family lore that John Bailey Bruce mistakenly was an only child.
William J. Bruce, in the Fall of 1900, married Lucy Jordan of Whitfield County, GA and had 4 children. Tragically, both William and Lucy died within 6 months of each other. Thomas D. Bruce who had already married, returned to Whitfield County in 1910 and took the 4 children with him to raise in Paris, Texas.
No one from the line of these 2 younger brothers have been able to trace their ancestry beyond 1880 Gilmer County. About 2 years ago an open message from "Jim Bruce" was posted on Ancestry.Com seeking information about his Grandfather, William F. Bruce. The email address "bruce2k@bellsouth.net" has since become invalid.
If anyone has a contact in "BellSouth.Net" and can secure the information on the above email account or has information to share on this family, Please email me direct.

My Wilbanks family settled in the Crossville-Geraldine area of Dekalb County around the mid 1850s. They attended the Old Macedonia Baptist Church where many are buried. Shadrack Wilbanks was possibly a minister there. When I was last there in the early or mid-1990s, a kinsman pointed out the Wilbanks burials as the whitewashed stones, making them virtually unreadable. I found the area to be very beautiful. Would love to come visit again sometime.
