David Goodwin  Mon Jul 27 10:08:39 1998

Future president Andrew JACKSON either led or accompanied a party of immigrants from South Carolina into Davidson County in 1789. Because of continuing conflicts with Indians, most members of the group were confined to the Ft. Nashville blockhouse for over a year. Some later went to KY. Does anyone have the names of the immigrant party members? I believe members of a Goodwin family I'm interested in were in it, along with (possibly) members of a Hightower family. Any help out there on this one?

Searching for HUNTER information. Jacob HUNTER (1755-1806) died in Davidson Co. Tenn. His son, Manuel HUNTER, m. Judith LEE, dau. of Braxton LEE, in Davidson Co., Tenn. on 20 May, 1808. Jacob HUNTER's widow, Polly/Mary, married Braxton LEE just a few days before Mr. Lee gave his dau. Judith LEE away to marry Jacob HUNTER's son, Manuel HUNTER. So Manuel's mother was married a few days before to his father-in-law to be. Braxton LEE's first wife, Elizabeth HATCHER, also died in Davidson Co. Tnn. on 23 Nov. 1807. Braxton LEE died in Davidson Co. in 1841. The LEEs were from Goochland, Va., and the HATCHERs from Henrico County, Elizabeth HATCHER's g-g-grandfather having been William HATHCER, who was a Burgess, being foced to apologize on his knees before the house of Burgesses in 1654 for calling Ed Hill a devil. Jacob HUNTER started off in Germany or England, went to North Carolina, but was enlisted in Andrew CUMMIN's company of vol. militia in South CArolina on Oct. 30, 1775. This band became attached Colleton County South Carolina Regiment of For Orangeburgh, S.C. and nearby districts. (1777). In 1785, Jacob HUNTER was acquring land in South Carolina, on SAvanah Creek, a tributary of Congee River. in South Carolina. In 1790 he was living in Richland County S.C. . in 1793 Jacob and his wife Mary/Polly (BOONE or BRYANT?) moved to Robertson Co. Tenn, and acquired land on the Cumberland River and some on both sides of Sycamore Creek. He died intestate. in DAvidson Co., Tenn. in 1806. He lived along the Cumberland in Robinson Co. Any information concerning any of the above would be most appreciated.

Most of my research has been in the North East and I am not sure as to how to proceed. Just received a copy of an ancestor's (Jacob CHOLWELL) will which was proven on July 27, 1835. It states that his sons John E. CHOLWELL & Jacob CHOLWELL were of Nashville, Tennessee. I thought I had identified these sons in New York City but wonder now if I have the wrong ones. Or were they only in Nashville for a short time? Are there directories for the City of Nashville? Are there census indexes for 1830, 1840, etc. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
