I know my great-great grandparents were married at "nixon's" in Cleburne co. by
a Justice of the Peace. (I would like to also know what "Nixon's" was?) After
several years of marriage and several children, John F. THOMPSON left his family
in Tennessee and they never heard from him again. This was around 1906-1908. We
have information where his sons Sherman and Marion Richard THOMPSON were looking
for him in this same area several years after he disappeared. I am in the
process of trying to find what happened to John Farley THOMPSON, Jr or to any of
his family - mom, dad, siblings, etc. that may have lived in the area. John
Farley Thompson had 7 legal names so he may have used some of his other names
when he disappeared. There was also some report that he sold land that the city
of Rome, GA wanted and he ended up in court and won the case. (This story may or
may not be true?!?!) There is a report that the land actually belonged to his
wife, Clara HIGHTOWER, a native American from that area. I am also looking for
information regarding her family. Thanks for any help you can give me!

Does anyone have information on people in Cleburne COunty named HAMMITT ? My
GG-GPs, Dr. Charles Jefferson Hammitt and Susan Ann Pollack Kincey Hammitt,
lived in Edwardsville to run the old Edwardsville School
(Methodist-Episcopal-owned) around 1910 for one year. My G-GPs, (their son)
Charles Malcolm Hammitt and new wife Hattie Franklin Johnson Hammitt, lived
there that year as well, and their firstborn son (my GF), Carl Owen Hammitt, was
born 6-18-1910 in Edwardsville. Charles Malcolm Hammitt lived there "to run my
uncle's printing press" (according to a letter he wrote). I have a hunch that
the uncle might be E.B. Hammitt, the affluent businessman affiliated with the
Fruithurst winery (originally from Massachusetts), but cannot find needed
evidence/links. Any information would be greatly appreciated! Thanks:)

I am searching for descendants of Tillman Pruitt (1833-1894); Matilda Pruitt
Johnson (1836-?) and Eli Pruitt (1840-?) who came to Cleburne Co, AL just after
Civil War. Tillman settled around the Piney Woods area and belonged to Piney
Woods Primitive Baptist Church. They were born in SC and their father, William
Pruitt, migrated to Cherokee Co, GEORGIA around 1842. Want to meet some East AL
cousins and exchange info. Donald Pruitt
