| ALGenWeb: County Index: Chilton County |
This is a very brief description of the some of the boundaries that
affect Chilton County,Al genealogists. Before 1828 everything East of the
Cossa River to the Ga. line was Indian lands but by 1831 St. Clair, Shelby
and Montgomery Counties extended to the Georgia line. By 1832 Alabama started
to show some of the shape it has today with counties across the state that
have changed many times.
I've included X's at (north to south) Jemison,Clanton
and Verbena as reference points.
Maps are from my copy of AniMap Plus, County Boundary Historical Atlas
with permission. I find it very useful. Their site is Gold
Bug Historic Maps & Software
This site has downloadable pdf files of the ADOT county highway maps. They are large files, Chilton is 99mb.
Alabama Maps, a U of Alabama site with lots of old maps of the county. At Google Books Alabama begins on page 15 with a statewide road map. You can clip a copy but to get a clear copy you'll have to download the whole book. The 1894 Rand, McNally & Co.'s Atlas I
only scanned Chilton and some of the surrounding area. It is a little large
at 129Kb
A 1891 Topo map of most
of Chilton, a 4 mega byte map. This will be a slow download for most
so I recommend you save it to your harddrive. This is the same as the 1891
topo at the U of Alabama website but in a format you can save. From my
personal map collection.
and is not as clear as I woul like. However I love old maps and it may
be of use to someone.
